Episode Show Notes
In this bonus episode of Law Without the Latin, Sophie and Samantha introduce themselves and Courtney.
Samantha says she "is a barrister, mother, volunteer, and obsessive Freddie Mercury Fan. In 2020 [she] lost the central vision in one eye, and life has been fuzzier, literally, as a result. But [she] has found that losing a chunk of [her] sight has brought things into much sharper focus, like [her] desire to put purpose ahead of profit in [her] working life. Part of that purpose is tackling the major power imbalance between the well-paid professionals on the inside of the legal system, versus the consumers, the people who actually need to make use of the law. Most of whom can't afford much, or any, legal advice. Courtney was founded in large part to counter that imbalance through snappy easy education and opening up the very closed shop of legal know-how to the people who really need it."
Sophie says she is "also a barrister, trained mediator, mother, amateur interior designer and somewhat of a campaigner. [She] plays into every stereotype of the Yorkshire lass [she] smiles at people on the tube, [her] cup is always half full and that cup is full of Yorkshire tea. Sam and [Sophie] share something significant in common, the past few years have been hard. For [her] it has been a journey through infertility to hysterectomy and caring for people [she] loves dearly through craniotomies and cancer. [She] says this not to garner any sympathy but to give you the landscape in which Sam and [Sophie] found [themselves] shifting in [their] sense of purpose. Sometimes you are handed opportunities to assess what really matters to you. Sam and [Sophie] are colleagues in the same chambers, QEB, known for having some of the top minds in [their] industry. [She] is really grateful to them for supporting [her] in bringing Courtney to life."
Sam and Sophie discuss how and why Courtney came to be and their wish to start a legal wellbeing revolution.
Upcoming episodes will feature renowned experts on family law disputes (and how to fix them).
