In family cases, an award of funds for legal fees can be requested by agreement or through the court. This award is called a 'legal services payment order' (there are different names depending on whether the funding is for a divorce or a case about children). These awards require the financially stronger person to provide funds to the financially weaker person to help with instructing lawyers.
