Not knowing where to start is completely normal. You are not alone. A separation or family dispute throws up so many important and difficult questions.
When we’re anxious and facing change, we can crave answers and a clearer view of the future. It is not stress-free. It is not uncertainty-free. You have our permission, if you need it, to find the situation completely rubbish and the ‘system’ not especially user friendly (to use polite language).

Starting to deal with your finances on separation
No matter the process you choose, no matter your ex’s nature, you don’t have full control over the way forward, the timescales or the end result. This is because there are two (or more) different sides going through a formal, legal process while also experiencing emotional upheaval. No sensible person ever said relationship breakdown is easy.
Expect bumps in the road. Expect to get things wrong sometimes. Expect your expectations to be dashed. But know that there will be an end. One day, this will all be history.
Finally, as ever, take no risks with your safety or those of your nearest and dearest. Make the call when the need first arises, don’t wait for an escalation.
