The Mission

You are clueless. But it's not your fault.
That is one way of summing up the conclusions of piles of research papers on how people approach separation and divorce. Most people avoid legal services because of the cost but find there is no single destination for user-friendly information provided by experts. So, couples and parents go through these processes with limited understanding of their legal issue or their options. This can have lasting consequences for financial and legal wellbeing.
This situation has gone on too long.
Courtney aims to change the power imbalance in which lawyers and other professionals have essential know-how but the people who need their services do not.
Courtney was founded by five professional women on a mission to share the expertise and insight of the best lawyers with anyone facing a legal issue. Quality legal advice is a luxury few can afford. Through empowering, visual learning, Courtney aims to help a lot of people, without the luxury price-tag. This isn't legal advice. It's legal empowerment.
Welcome to the legal education revolution.
Who is Courtney For?

We think Courtney is for everyone. People going through a separation or potential family dispute and their friends and family, as well as lawyers, other professionals, students and those simply interested to know more or get prepared.
If you are personally facing a financial family law issue, Courtney's content is crafted with you in mind, whether you intend to engage a lawyer or not. Knowledge is power, regardless of who you pay to have in your corner.
Legal professionals provide legal advice, specific to their clients’ needs. Their role is not to educate or neutrally to inform their clients. That is not to say that lawyers, mediators, and other professionals in this field do not offer quality information. But that is not their principal business, which is payment for bespoke services.
Courtney aims to provide information in the language most people use, not legal jargon, and with emphasis on speedy, visual learning. And because Courtney is not selling services, our information is independent and neutral, as far as practical. We think that important information should come from an independent, expert source, whose business is education. You don’t expect your dentist to educate you about the other health services you might need. Specialists stay in their narrow lane and tend to keep their clients there, too.
That is why good legal professionals – like good dentists – want their clients to have access to the best, independent information about their situation from a trusted source.
The problem – when the issue is a legal one – is the intimidation factor. Legalese and jargon make self-education feel like studying for a masters in a foreign language. No thanks.
Courtney is here to take out the intimidating technical stuff and speak about the law in your language, at your pace. With pragmatism and an eye on wellbeing.
