One was almost a professional hockey player. Another is a self-proclaimed geek who has a penchant for Excel spreadsheets. She’s our estate planning solicitor founder talking death and taxes for 20 years now, Victoria. ✍🏼 Victoria is looking forward to curating some content to help you navigate your Will writing process and add to our growing library of financial family advice. But, in the meantime, she has this to say about last week’s budget: ❓ “I know Wednesday’s budget was a BIG DEAL for most. My inbox is full of clients looking at their assets with a new perspective, especially business and farm owners [did we mention Victoria lives in rural Leicestershire?]. For those navigating divorce it can be another reminder of financial instability. As tax reliefs are cut, and taxes rise, there is often less to go around. Could this be a good time to revisit your Will, or make an appointment to see a specialist to write one? Most estate planning solicitors will analyse your estate in detail. They might even point out ways in which you can save tax, or structure your estate to maximise relief and make sure your family receives as much of your money as possible. ❓What happened? The title of Hillary Clinton’s 2017 autobiography. Perhaps Kamala will riff on the same theme. WTF happened? 👜 Politics, happily, is not Courtney’s bag. Sharing learning is our thing. For anyone in/around NCDR, litigation or family law, here are some reflections, following this week: 🏠 Over-intellectualising can mean losing a grip on bread-and-butter issues. It’s not uncommon for private FDR evaluators to hear plenty about matrimonialisation but comparatively little about mortgage repayments and childcare costs. In financial remedies, it’s the (household) “economy, stupid”. 🌡️ As Maya Angelou said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” If any audience is made to feel maligned or idiotic, your message may get nowhere fast. ⚖️The more prep time, the better… get those papers in nice and early. 🛣️ The path to losing at trial is paved with great FDR indications. The case, the issues, the landscape and, crucially, the judge will change in that short period. 🤷‍♀️Sometimes things go really wrong. Catastrophising and introspecting helps no-one except, perhaps, our opponents. 🤪 Mark Twain: “When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained.” Amen to that. ➕ Got one to add? 🇺🇸 In the spirit of American politics, we may even have some Courtney branded merch for the best suggestions.
